# Clean your AirPods

A cleaning tone works on AirPods, but earbuds need a different approach from a phone: lower volume, and never in your ears. Read the safety note before you press start.

**Take the AirPods out of your ears first.** A sustained low tone at high volume inside a sealed ear canal is a real hearing risk — it does not ease off the way music does, and the seal means none of it escapes. Put them on a table, start the tone from your phone, and keep your distance while it runs.

## Setting this up correctly

1.  **Pair the AirPods and take them out of the case.** They must be connected and out of the case, or the tone plays through the phone instead.
2.  **Put them on a hard surface, mesh facing down.** A table with a paper towel underneath is ideal — you will sometimes see a small damp mark appear.
3.  **Set volume to about half.** Not maximum. AirPod drivers are tiny and need far less energy than a phone speaker.
4.  **Start the tone and step back.** Let a full cycle run.
5.  **Brush the mesh gently with a dry soft brush.** Along the surface, never poking into it.
6.  **Repeat once or twice**, then listen and compare the two buds.

## What a tone can and cannot clear

Being straight about this matters more with AirPods than with phones, because the most common AirPod blockage is the one tone handles worst.

Earwax is the honest weak spot. It is sticky and it bonds to the mesh rather than sitting loose on it, and vibration simply does not move bonded material. If your AirPods have gone quiet gradually and you can see a yellowish film on the mesh, a brush will do far more than any tone.

## How to brush AirPods safely

-   **Use a dry, soft-bristled brush.** A clean unused toothbrush, or the small brush that comes with electric shavers.
-   **Brush across the mesh, never into it.** Pushing bristles inward compacts wax through the mesh, and once it is behind there you cannot get it back.
-   **Hold the bud mesh-down while you brush** so what you loosen falls out instead of settling back.
-   **Never use liquid.** No alcohol, no water, no cleaning spray. Liquid dissolves wax into a thinner form that flows further in and then dries.
-   **Never use anything sharp.** Pins and SIM tools puncture the mesh, and a punctured mesh means the driver is now open to everything.

**Clean the case too.** Most people forget it entirely. The charging case collects a remarkable amount of pocket lint in the two bud wells, and that lint sits directly against the charging contacts. If your AirPods charge unreliably, that is usually why. A dry brush and a cotton bud handles it.

## If they got properly wet

AirPods survive water more often than people expect, and the thing that usually kills them is not the water — it is being put back in the charging case while still wet. Current plus moisture across the contacts is what causes permanent damage.

1.  **Do not put them in the case.** Leave them out.
2.  **Stand them mesh-down on a towel** somewhere dry with airflow.
3.  **Wait at least 24 hours.** Longer if they took a full soak.
4.  **Then run the cleaning tone** at moderate volume.
5.  **Check the case is bone dry** before putting them back.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I wear AirPods while the tone plays?

No. Never. A sustained low tone at high volume directly in a sealed ear canal is a genuine hearing risk, and unlike music it does not let up. Put the AirPods on a table, start the tone from your phone, and stay an arm’s length away.

### Will a tone remove earwax from AirPods?

Only the loose surface flakes. Earwax is sticky and warm, and it bonds to the mesh rather than resting on it — vibration does not shift bonded material. Earwax needs careful mechanical cleaning with a dry soft brush. The tone is genuinely useful for sweat and water, and only marginally useful for wax.

### Are AirPods waterproof?

Sweat and water resistant on most recent models, not waterproof, and the charging case is rated lower than the buds themselves on several generations. They survive rain and workouts. They do not survive a wash cycle, and no generation is designed for submersion.

### My AirPods went through the washing machine.

Do not put them in the case and do not charge them. Stand them mesh-down on a towel somewhere dry with airflow for at least 24 hours, then try the cleaning tone at moderate volume. Recovery is genuinely possible — the water itself is usually less of a problem than charging a wet bud, which is what actually kills them.

### Only one AirPod sounds quiet.

Almost always a blocked mesh on that bud rather than a fault. Compare the two under a bright light — the blocked one usually looks visibly duller or greyer. Brush it with a dry soft-bristled brush, then run a cycle with it mesh-down.

### Should I use full volume like I would on a phone?

No. Start at roughly half volume and only raise it if needed. AirPod drivers are a fraction of the size of a phone speaker and there is far less material in the way, so they need much less energy to clear. High volume on a tiny driver is also where distortion and real damage risk start.
