# How to get water out of a phone speaker

There are about eight methods people recommend for this. Three work, two are harmless but slow, and three actively make things worse. Here they are in order, with an honest account of what each one does.

## The short answer

1.  **Take the case off** and tap the phone against your palm, speaker facing down.
2.  **Run a cleaning tone** at full volume with the grille pointing at the floor.
3.  **Wipe the grille** and repeat two or three times.
4.  **Leave it somewhere dry and airy** for a few hours before charging.

That clears the overwhelming majority of wet phone speakers. Everything below is the detail.

## What actually works

### 1\. A low-frequency cleaning tone

The most effective single method, and the only one that applies force directly where the water is. Playing a tone around 165 Hz at full volume drives the speaker cone through its maximum travel, which breaks the surface tension holding water to the mesh and pumps air outward through the grille.

The key details: volume at maximum, case off, grille facing down, Bluetooth off. Run it for thirty seconds, wipe, and repeat. Two or three cycles beats one long one, because wiping between cycles stops ejected water wicking straight back in.

### 2\. Gravity and firm taps

Unglamorous and genuinely effective, especially as a first step before the tone. Hold the phone with the speaker facing down and tap it firmly against the heel of your palm five or six times. This dislodges the larger droplets immediately.

Tap, do not shake. Shaking a wet phone is how people drop them.

### 3\. Time, airflow and patience

Boring, but it is what finishes the job. After you have cleared the chamber, there will still be moisture elsewhere inside the phone, and nothing removes that except evaporation.

Stand the phone upright somewhere dry with air moving — a desk fan pointed at it is ideal, at room temperature. Give it a few hours before charging, and longer if it took a real soak.

## Harmless but slow

### Silica gel packets

A genuine desiccant, unlike rice, and it will lower the humidity in a sealed container. The limitation is that it works on ambient air, so it only helps with moisture that can evaporate out of the phone on its own — it does not pull water out of a sealed chamber. Use it as a finishing step alongside a cleaning tone, in a sealed box with the phone. It costs nothing to try and does no harm.

### A fan or cool moving air

Genuinely helpful and completely safe, as long as the air is at room temperature. Moving air carries evaporated moisture away and keeps evaporation going, where still air quickly saturates around the phone. Slow, but a good thing to leave running overnight.

## What makes it worse

**Rice.** The most persistent myth in phone repair. Rice absorbs humidity from the air around it, not from inside a sealed chassis, and it does so more slowly than simply leaving the phone in a dry room. Meanwhile it sheds starch dust that gets into the grille and the charging port. Every phone technician will tell you the same thing: skip it.

**A hairdryer.** Heat is the issue, not air. Phone assemblies rely on adhesive that softens well below hairdryer temperature, so you risk damaging the very seals that limited the water ingress. Forced hot air can also drive moisture further in rather than out. A cool fan does the useful part with none of the risk.

**A vacuum cleaner.** Too powerful and too clumsy to seal against a grille properly, so it mostly achieves nothing while you hold a spinning motor against your phone. On the lowest setting with a small nozzle it is merely useless rather than dangerous.

**Compressed air.** Actively harmful at close range. A can of compressed air delivers enough pressure to push debris _deeper_ into the chamber and to damage a membrane thinner than paper. It also sometimes sprays liquid propellant, which is the exact opposite of what you want.

**Anything poked into the grille.** Pins, needles, SIM tools, paperclips. The membrane behind the mesh is extremely thin and punctures instantly. This is the single most common way people turn a temporarily muffled speaker into a permanently broken one.

**Charging it while wet.** Current plus moisture across the port contacts is what corrodes them. If your phone shows a moisture warning and refuses to charge, that warning is protecting you — do not override it.

## How long to wait before charging

## When it is not just water

Sound clears a speaker chamber. It does nothing about anything else. Get it looked at properly if you see any of these:

-   Moisture visible under the screen glass.
-   The screen flickering, showing lines, or responding to touches you did not make.
-   The phone getting warm while switched off.
-   It went into salt water, a swimming pool or a sugary drink.
-   Crackling or buzzing from the speaker rather than muffling.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does it take for a phone speaker to dry on its own?

Anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days, depending on how much got in and how humid the room is. The speaker chamber has one small opening, so evaporation is slow. This is exactly why mechanical removal with a tone is worth doing rather than just waiting.

### Does rice actually work?

No. Rice absorbs ambient humidity from the air around it, not water sealed inside a phone chassis, and it is slower than simply leaving the phone in a dry room. Worse, rice sheds starch dust that works into the grille and the charging port. It is a persistent myth with no upside.

### Can I use a hairdryer?

No. Heat is the problem. Phones are assembled with adhesive that softens well below hairdryer temperature, so you risk compromising the seals that were keeping water out in the first place, and forced hot air can push moisture deeper into the chassis. Cool moving air is fine — a fan is genuinely useful.

### Is silica gel better than rice?

Yes, substantially — it is a real desiccant rather than a folk remedy. But it works on ambient humidity, so it helps with moisture that has already reached the inside of the phone, and it is slow. Use it alongside a cleaning tone rather than instead of one.

### Should I shake my phone?

Tap rather than shake. Firm taps against your palm with the speaker facing down move water out effectively. Violent shaking risks dropping the phone, which converts a minor problem into an expensive one.

### My phone sounds fine now. Do I still need to dry it?

Yes. Clear audio only tells you the speaker chamber is clear — it says nothing about moisture elsewhere in the phone. Leave it somewhere dry and airy for a few hours, and make sure the charging port is completely dry before plugging anything in.
