A laptop speaker fires _upward_ through a grille on a horizontal surface, and the laptop sits open on a desk for eight hours a day. That means gravity is working against you continuously. Every particle of household dust that settles on the keyboard deck settles into the speaker grille too, and unlike a phone there is no pocket friction occasionally knocking it loose. Add crumbs, pet hair and the fabric fibres from using a laptop on a bed or a sofa, and most laptops have a genuinely impressive amount of material sitting in the mesh by year three. Almost nobody ever cleans them. This is why a three-year-old laptop so often sounds thin and quiet compared to how you remember it, with no single moment where anything went wrong. ## The cleaning routine for a laptop 1. **Find the grilles.** They vary a lot — see the table below. Some laptops fire downward off the base, which changes how you hold it. 2. **Brush first, thoroughly.** Laptops have more surface debris than phones, so this step matters more here. Dry soft brush, sweeping along the grille. 3. **Turn off audio enhancements.** On Windows: Sound settings, your speakers, disable enhancements and spatial sound. On Mac there is nothing to disable, but quit any EQ app. 4. **Set volume to maximum and run a Dust Removal cycle.** 5. **Tilt the laptop while it runs.** This is the awkward part — grilles usually face up, so gravity is against you. They also collect less dust in the first place. **If you spilled a drink, stop and read this.** Do not run a cleaning tone on a laptop that has just had liquid spilled on it. Shut it down immediately, unplug it, remove the battery if it is removable, and stand it upside down in a tent shape so liquid drains away from the logic board. Leave it at least 24 hours. Sugary drinks and coffee leave a sticky residue that no tone will ever move and that needs the machine opened and cleaned properly. ## Windows: check the software before the hardware Windows has more ways to quietly ruin your audio than any other platform, and all of them look like a broken speaker: - **Audio enhancements** — Sound settings, your output device, Advanced. Turn them all off and test. - **Spatial sound** — Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos for Headphones both make laptop speakers sound distant and hollow. - **Wrong output device** — a monitor connected over HDMI or DisplayPort will silently become the default output. Check the volume flyout. - **Loudness equalisation** — compresses dynamic range and makes everything sound flat. - **Outdated or generic drivers** — install the manufacturer's audio driver rather than the Microsoft generic one. Work through those before you conclude anything is physically wrong. On a Mac the equivalent short list is: check the output device in Sound settings, and quit any third-party EQ app. ## Frequently asked questions ### I spilled a drink on my laptop keyboard. Should I run this? Not yet, and this is the one case where the order genuinely matters. Shut the laptop down immediately, unplug it, and turn it upside down like a tent so liquid drains away from the board rather than into it. Leave it like that for at least 24 hours. Only run a cleaning tone once you are confident it is dry and working normally. ### Why are my laptop speakers so much quieter than they used to be? Dust, almost always. Laptop speaker grilles sit horizontally facing upward, which makes them very efficient dust collectors, and a laptop lives on desks and beds rather than in a pocket. Most laptops have never been cleaned in their lives. Dust Removal plus a soft brush usually makes an obvious difference. ### My MacBook speakers crackle at high volume. Crackling that only appears above a certain volume usually means a damaged or partially detached driver rather than a blockage, and a tone will not fix it. On recent MacBook Pro models they are the long grilles either side of the keyboard. A normal vacuum is too powerful and too clumsy to seal against a grille, so it mostly achieves nothing.
