# Speaker test

Test each channel on its own before you assume anything is broken. Knowing whether one side is dead, quiet or fine tells you immediately whether you are dealing with a blockage or a hardware fault.

## What each test tells you

### Left and Right, separately

The most useful test on the page. Play left, then right, and compare them directly. On a modern phone the two channels come from two physically different speakers — the bottom grille and the earpiece — so this pinpoints which one to work on.

### Both

A centre-panned tone through both channels. Useful as a baseline and for confirming that audio is actually reaching your device at all before you start diagnosing anything else.

### Left to right sweep

Pans a tone smoothly from one side to the other. If the movement is lopsided — the sound seems to jump to one side, or fades in the middle — one channel is weaker than the other even if both are technically working.

### Frequency sweep

Runs from 50 Hz to 15 kHz. This is your distortion and rattle detector. A healthy speaker produces a smooth continuous rise with no sudden changes in character. Listen for buzzing, a rattling edge, or a band where the tone drops out.

**Disconnect Bluetooth first.** If your phone is still paired with a watch, a car, earbuds in a bag or a TV, you will be testing that device instead and every result will be meaningless. Turn Bluetooth off entirely rather than just disconnecting.

## Testing headphones and earbuds

The left and right tests are the fastest way to diagnose earbuds. Put one bud in — or better, hold them near your ears rather than in them — and run each channel. A bud that plays at noticeably lower volume than its twin almost always has a blocked mesh rather than a fault, and a [cleaning cycle](https://fixmyspeaker.me/earbuds/) usually restores it.

The left-right sweep is also a quick check for wiring problems on wired headphones: crackling as the pan moves, or a channel cutting in and out, usually means a damaged cable near the plug.

## Test before and after cleaning

Worth doing, because the improvement from a cleaning cycle is often gradual enough that you talk yourself out of believing it. ## Frequently asked questions

### Why should I test before cleaning?

Because it tells you whether you have a blockage or a fault, and those need completely different responses. If one channel is dead silent, that is hardware and no amount of cleaning will change it. If one channel is quieter and duller than the other, that is a blockage and cleaning will help. Two minutes of testing saves twenty minutes of pointless cycles.

### My phone has one speaker. Does the left-right test still work?

Yes, and it is still useful. Most modern phones use the earpiece above the screen as the second stereo channel, so running left and right separately tells you which of the two physical grilles is affected. On a genuinely mono phone both tests will sound identical, which is itself a valid result.

### One channel sounds quieter but not silent.

That is the classic signature of a partial blockage — lint or water reducing output rather than stopping it. It is also the most fixable case. Run a cleaning cycle with that grille facing down and retest.

### I hear buzzing during the frequency sweep.

Note roughly where it starts. Buzzing that appears only in a narrow band usually means something loose rattling — a case, a screen protector edge, or debris in the chamber. Buzzing across a wide range, especially at higher volume, points to a damaged diaphragm, which is a repair rather than a clean.

### The sweep goes silent at the low end.

That is completely normal on a phone or laptop. Small drivers cannot reproduce much below 150 to 200 Hz — there is not enough cone area or travel to move that much air. Only judge the sweep from about 200 Hz upward on a small speaker.

### Should I test with headphones on?

Only if you are testing the headphones. To test phone or laptop speakers, disconnect Bluetooth entirely and unplug anything from the headphone jack, or you will be testing the wrong device and concluding your speaker is fine when it is not.
