Fix my speaker — iPad & tablets
Tablets have more speakers than phones, usually spread across two opposite edges, so cleaning takes two passes instead of one. Works on every iPad and on Android tablets like the Galaxy Tab.
A sustained low tone that vibrates the driver hard enough to break the surface tension of trapped water and push it out of the grille.
Turn your volume all the way up, then press start.
- Take the case off and turn Bluetooth off.
- Raise the volume to maximum with the side buttons.
- Hold the phone with the speaker facing down.
- Run the tone, wipe the grille, then repeat if it still sounds muffled.
Two passes, not one
This is the one thing that is genuinely different about cleaning a tablet. An iPad Pro or iPad Air has four speakers arranged as two pairs on opposite edges of the body. Gravity can only help you with one edge at a time.
- Find your grilles. Look along both long edges (or both short edges — it depends on the model) for the speaker holes.
- Hold one edge down and run a full cycle. Prop the iPad upright against something rather than trying to hold it steady for thirty seconds.
- Wipe that edge dry.
- Rotate 180 degrees and run it again. Now the other pair is pointing at the floor.
- Wipe again, then test. Use the speaker test to compare channels.
Entry-level iPads and the iPad mini have two speakers on a single edge, which makes this simpler — one pass, that edge down.
iPads are not waterproof, and that matters
Worth being blunt about this because people assume iPads inherit iPhone water resistance. They do not. No iPad model has ever carried an IP rating — not the Pro, not the Air, not the mini, not the base model.
An iPhone that goes in the sink is usually fine and just needs its speaker cleared. An iPad that goes in the sink has water inside the chassis with nothing designed to stop it. If yours took a real soak rather than a splash:
- Power it off immediately and leave it off.
- Do not plug it in to check whether it still charges.
- Stand it on edge somewhere dry with airflow for a day or more.
- Run the cleaning tone only once you are confident it is otherwise dry and working.
For a splash on the grille — a drink knocked over, rain, a wet hand — the tone is exactly the right tool and there is nothing to worry about.
Check AirPlay before assuming it failed. iPads spend their lives near Apple TVs and HomePods, and audio gets left pointing at them. Open Control Centre, look at the audio card in the top right, and make sure it says iPad.
Why tablet speakers clog differently
Tablets do not live in pockets, so they collect far less lint than phones do. What they get instead is dust — they spend long periods lying flat on a table or a bed, grille-up, quietly accumulating whatever is in the air, and they are used in the kitchen and the bathroom more than phones are.
Because the debris is loose airborne dust rather than compacted fabric fibre, Dust Removal tends to work very well on tablets. It also means the grilles benefit from an occasional sweep with a dry soft brush more than they benefit from tone alone.
Android tablets
Identical approach. Most Galaxy Tab models use a four-speaker layout in two pairs, so rotate and repeat the same way. Frequently asked questions
My iPad has four speakers. Do I clean them all?
Yes, one pair at a time. iPad Pro and iPad Air models have two grilles on each of two opposite edges. Because you can only point one edge at the floor at a time, run a cycle with one edge down, then rotate the iPad 180 degrees and run it again.
Does iPad orientation change which speakers are active?
It changes which channel is which, not whether they play. iPadOS reassigns left and right stereo as you rotate so audio always matches the picture. All the speakers keep producing sound, so for cleaning purposes orientation only matters for gravity.
Are iPads waterproof?
No. Unlike iPhones, no iPad carries an IP rating at all — not the Pro, not the Air, not the mini. An iPad that goes in the bath is in genuinely more trouble than an iPhone would be. Power it off, do not charge it, and get it looked at if it took a real soak.
The tone is quiet even at full volume.
Check Settings, Sounds, and look for a volume limit. Then check the Control Centre audio card for AirPlay — iPads are often left pointing at an Apple TV. Also check that Silent Mode and Do Not Disturb are not in an unexpected state, though neither should affect media playback.
Does this work on Galaxy Tab and other Android tablets?
Yes, exactly the same way. Most Galaxy Tab models also have four speakers in two pairs on opposite edges, so use the same rotate-and-repeat approach. Turn Dolby Atmos off in sound settings first.
Water got under the screen. Will this help?
No. A cleaning tone only moves what is inside a speaker chamber. Moisture visible under the glass needs the device powered off immediately and opened by a technician — leaving it on risks shorting the display connector.
